Oh, it’s taken ages for me to come up with a challenge for April. It’s a particularly tricky one because I’m at home for half of it and on holiday IN AUSTRALIA *happy dance* for the other half. So I needed something I could do both at home and away (pun absolutely intended).
I finally found my challenge in the form of this article on Huffington Post. Live Like a Tourist, Travel Like a Local, it said. Essentially; enjoy one’s home city the way a tourist does, and conversely try to get under the skin of your holiday destination by making like you live there. This is right up my street. I live in a world heritage city, but you’d be surprised how easy it can be to forget to really soak it up, as I did when I first got here. I’m also becoming a big fan of trying to make like a local while on holiday, so would love to push myself a little further down this path.
So, first up, I need a plan to enjoy Bath like a tourist. Some targets seem appropriate here.
- Do the museums and galleries – one’s I haven’t been to, one’s I’ve neglected…
- explore a neighbourhood
- Take photos
- Try new cafes and bars
- Tick off the top attractions from TripAdvisor
- Eat ice-cream and local specialities (I know, tough gig!)
- determinedly enjoy myself in crap weather (I’m British, after all)
A quick look through the TripAdvisor attraction suggestions has already unearthed some incredibly well rated things I’d never even heard of. Let the adventure begin!
